New
Georgia Law - Targeting Uninsured Motorist
Georgia has a new law intended to stop the
practice of illegal driving with out auto insurance.
Effective February 1, 2003 your insurance ID
card will no longer be valid proof of insurance.
An estimated 1.6 million Georgia vehicle owners
will get a letter from the state saying that their insurance company has
not electronically file their proof of insurance with the state of
Georgia. This may be a simple typographical error, and is
easily fixed.
Due to the new law it will be essential that
the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number on the vehicle matches the
one that the tag office has as well as the one that your insurance company
has.
Even if you do not get a letter from the state
it would be wise to be sure that both the number that the tag office has
and the one that your insurance company has match the VIN on your
vehicle. Your VIN number can be found on a metal plate on the
dashboard of your vehicle and can be read thru the windshield of the
vehicle.
If the number on your insurance ID card or
insurance policy does not match the VIN number on the vehicle you need to
contact your insurance agent and get it corrected. If the number
that the tag office has does not match the VIN number on the vehicle
itself you will need to contact the tag office.
If the numbers do not match a police officer
will no longer take an ID card as proof of insurance. The tag office
will no longer be renewing any tags with out the electronic proof.
If you have any questions or concerns about
your VIN numbers please stop by we would be happy to discuss it with you.
If you would like to verify that the GA tag
office has your correct VIN please click the following link. You
